Contract-to-Hire or FTE Employment Opportunity in Illinois - Is this OK to post here?

I am hoping this posting is OK for this forum (?), but I am trying to help my colleagues find a resource for a great client of ours.

In brief, we are looking for a qualified SR JAVA Developer with 2-3 years experience with Hibernate. Additional skills would be AJAX, JSP, and experience with an agile development process.

This is for a great (global) client in the Northern suburbs of Illinois. They are looking for a qualified candidate who is seeking a long-term home. While they will do a CTH, they will also hire the right candidate immediately. This is a 100% "hands-On" role which will grow into more of a lead/mentoring type position 6/12 months down the road. This is a FT salaried position with complete company benefits.

If you are reading this and interested in the position, or you may know someone seeking a FT role in Illinois, please send your resume or forward this information. It is greatly appreciated!

The Account Manager for this role is MS Sapna Rao. Sapna can be reached at SP@atsus.net, or at 847-690-0255.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR TIME AND CONSIDERATION!

Yet another machine move

Finding a good dedicated server can be a big challenge. I moved to another server from where I was at (as cost is a big concern) and they stunk. But I still wanted a better machine at a cost that was at least as good as where I was at.

So I've moved to yet a new provider that, so far, has been excellent. The forums are now 64 bit! The PostgreSQL database along with Apache httpd and the JRE behind this forum are now all 64 bit. While I was using a 64 bit O/S about 11 years ago when using Solaris on SPARC, Intel and Linux are finally catching up and I'm taking advantage of it.

As with all server moves please let me know if there are any issues with this move. I'm hoping that this is the last one for the foreseeable future.

Software upgrade April 7

I'm doing big upgrade this weekend to the stuff under the forum:

The PostgreSQL database that is under the forum will be upgraded from 8.1.0 to 8.1.3. There are some security issues fixed in 8.1.3 and you can never be too paranoid :)

Apache httpd which runs in front of Tomcat will be upgraded from 2.0.54 to 2.0.55. This isn't really needed but I figure I'll just do them all at once.

mod_jk will be upgraded from 1.2.13 to 1.2.15. I figure anytime I upgrade Apache httpd I may as well upgrade this too.

The Subversion Apache plugin will be upgraded to 1.3.1. Again, upgrade http, upgrade the plugin modules.

Tomcat will be upgraded to 5.5.16. Again, not likely needed, but it is easier to do at the same time as...

The hotjoe forums will start running on Java 1.5.0_06. Yes, I have finally decided that 1.5 is stable enough for production use. They are currently using 1.4.2_08

I've got all of the software compiled and ready to go so it shouldn't take long to do the upgrade.

I'm hoping that these upgrades will take care of the "newest registed user" bug but I'm not sure. Otherwise they are to keep hotjoe.com using the latest but stable software, unlike other Java forums :D

I'll post another message when this is done.

Most members online stat

I recently reset the "most users online" thing at the bottom of the forum. JForum 2.1.5 has a new feature that no longer counts bots from, for example, Google or where ever. The problem is that these bots send many requests at once and that is why for a while we had a max user count of 100. Currently it is at 15 which is much more realistic. The good thing is that that was really 15 users and not just a robot.

Forum app server upgraded to Tomcat 5.5.15

The Tomcat server that runs the hotjoe.com forums has been upgraded to version 5.5.15.
Java and Javascript are not the same!

If you're looking for help with Javascript, also known as ECMAScript, you're in the wrong place. Through an unfortunate choice of names Java and Javascript sound the same but they are very different.

Java is a general purpose programming language that can be used in browsers by writting Java applets or it can be used on the server side to help with dynamic web pages. It also works very well at writing standalone applications.

Javascript is a browser side technology. At one point Netscape tried to produce a server that used Javascript for the programming language but I think that they are no longer producing that server. Pretty much everything involving Javascript now is run in the browser.

An excellent resource for Javascript questions is the Devshed Javascript Forum. While some people in the HotJoe Forums may also know Javascript this forum is focused on the Java language and associated technologies.

How to get help with homework / how to ask questions.

Those of us who have been using Java for a while recognize that it can be pretty frustrating to learn both programming in general along with Java (or for that matter any lanuguage) syntax. You can look at a place in your code where the compiler is telling you there is an error for hours and not see what the problem is.

For those times if you post the code along with what you've tried people will be more than willing to help. You are unlikely to get a direct answer like "this is the code you want". Instead you will most likely get some gentle nudging in the right direction, possibly in the form of another question.

The least likely way to get an answer is to ask things like "please fix this code" or "my homework is due in an hour and I haven't started". Realize that these forums are staffed with volunteers - we are not being paid to help you. Generally people are turned off when a poster has not shown that they have at least tried. I can't stress this part enough. If your goal is to get to the answer as quickly as possible then show us that we're not doing your homework for you.

We're trying to create quality forums that contain good information for the beginner through the expert level. Often it helps to see the thought process that other people have gone through so you too can learn from it. A good writeup from Eric S. Raymond details some smart ways to ask questions.

Other things.

Be very descriptive
The more information you can provide about the issue you're having the better. Don't just say "it doesn't work". Tell us what you've tried, what errors you're getting and, if applicable, a stack trace. As much as we'd like we're not mind readers. A big area for this is the Java version and operating system you're using. While there are strong similarities between Java versions there are important differences that will help other people to solve the problem quicker if they know the version. Often the operating system you're using isn't important but it can be at times. It is easy enough to post that information - include it if you think it would help.

Please use the code tag when posting code
This forum and other ones like it allow you to wrap your code in a tag that formats the code differently than the rest of the post. It also maintains spacing of your code so that it is easier to read. Please use it. On the GUI when you create a message you will see a "Code" button - select this to open and close your code tags.
