I still use a text editor and the command line. I use Edit plus. Eclipse seems to be a popular choice and it's free. If my computer ever gets upgraded i may consider making the switch.

I'd have to agree with tfecw - I mostly use vi and the command line. But when I do use an IDE it is Eclipse.

I do most of my programming in Eclipse, and I go to Kate when I want a GUI non-IDE editor in Linux, NoteTab Lite in Windows.

I've been trying to get NetBeans to work, but for some ****ing reason I can't get my cvs repository to work. NetBeans keeps telling me to check my user name, password, and repository. It's been a bit of a low priority, since I'm only doing that for curiosity's sake. Sigh.

If you like the 'hands on' approach afforded by text editors like notepad but want something a bit more java friendly, you might want to check out TextPad or JEdit. Both give you syntax colouring and allow you to compile and run without switching to the command line.

If it's a biggish project with more than a handful of classes, I'll use Eclipse. There's a bit of a learning curve involved there, but once you've got to grips with it you won't look back. For smaller stuff I tend to use Textpad.
